Afghanistan poses serious regional threat - CSTO

MOSCOW. May 25 (Interfax) - The withdrawal of the foreign military contingent from Afghanistan might enhance threats to member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) coming from Afghan territory, a statement published on the CSTO website said.

This opinion was expressed by participants in a meeting of a working group of the CSTO Council of Foreign Ministers on Afghanistan that took place in Moscow on Tuesday.

"CSTO Deputy Secretary General Samat Ordabayev noted that Afghanistan remains a territory from which serious threats to the security of CSTO member states come, in particular, in the light of the planned pullout of the foreign military contingent from the IRA [Islamic Republic of Afghanistan]," the statement said.

Ordabayev told the meeting's participants that Afghan issues were thoroughly discussed at the recent meetings of the CSTO Council of Foreign Ministers, the CSTO Council of Defense Ministers, and the CSTO Committee of Security Council Secretaries in Dushanbe, the statement said.
