MOSCOW. May 26 (Interfax) - Paul Whelan, a citizen of the United States, Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, has been vaccinated against coronavirus at the prison in Mordovia where he is serving a sentence for espionage, his brother told Interfax.
"Paul has received a Covid-19 shot of unknown provenance. Paul seems to be in good health and a repetitive stress injury on his elbow was seen to by prison doctors," David Whelan said on Tuesday.
Whelan was visited in prison by U.S. consular officials on May 20, he said.
On June 15, Whelan was found guilty of espionage and sentenced to 16 years of imprisonment at a high-security facility. He is serving his sentence at Penal Colony No. 17 in Mordovia. Whelan pleaded not guilty, but decided not to appeal his sentence, hoping that he would be exchanged.
