Myanmar military delegation visits Russia to familiarize itself with Pantsir production - source

MOSCOW. June 9 (Interfax) - A military delegation from Myanmar has visited to Russia to familiarize itself with the production of Pantsir air defense systems, an informed source told Interfax.

"A military delegation from Myanmar has visited a Russian plant manufacturing Pantsir air defense missile systems in order to familiarize itself with every production stage," the source said.

The visit to the plant was envisaged by a contract for the delivery of such air defense missile systems, he said.

Interfax reported earlier that an agreement on the delivery of Pantsir-S1 close-range air defense missile systems, Orlan-10E reconnaissance drones and radar stations to Myanmar was signed during Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu's visit to Myanmar in January.

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin said on January 20 that Russia might supply Myanmar with aircraft, armored vehicles and air defense systems in the coming years.

Russia and Myanmar agreed on the delivery of six Su-20 planes in 2018.

The Myanmar Armed Forces are already operating Russian military hardware, such as Mil Mi-24, Mi-35 and Mi-17 helicopters, MiG-29 fighter jets, Yakovlev Yak-130 combat trainers, and Pechora-2 air defense missile systems. Servicemen from Myanmar are being trained in Russian military higher education establishments.
