Turkish military presence in Afghanistan at odds with U.S.-Taliban deal - Russian Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. June 17 (Interfax) - Turkey's intention to keep its troops in Afghanistan, including for the protection of the airport in Kabul, would go against the agreements between the United States and the Taliban (banned in Russia), Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.

"The preservation by Turkey, as well as by any other country, of their military contingent in Afghanistan from the legal standpoint goes against the agreement signed between the U.S. and the Taliban movement in Doha. This document envisions the full withdrawal of foreign troops by May 1, this deadline has already been pushed back to September 11, 2021, and the Taliban has unambiguously expressed its negative attitude toward this prospect," Zakharova said at a press briefing on Thursday when commenting on Turkey's proposal on providing security of the Kabul airport after the NATO troops are withdrawn from Afghanistan.
