MOSCOW. June 17 (Interfax) - Moscow is concerned by the reports about the United States supplying weapons and equipment to Kosovo and warns against steps which could destabilize the Balkans, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Thursday.
"We note with alarm the reports of American supplies of weapons and military hardware to the authorities in Pristina," Zakharova said at a briefing.
"The U.S. thereby openly undermines the international efforts to ensure peace and stability in the Balkans, and the militarization of the self-proclaimed republic of Kosovo is incompatible with them," she said.
"Washington's intention is to create a kind of army in the province, which constitutes a direct gross violation of the UN Security Council resolution 1244," she said.
"We call on everyone who cares about the Balkans' fate and the future of this sensitive region, to not allow steps which could lead to the destabilization and accumulation of explosive conflict potential," Zakharova said.
In early June, Serbian media reported that the U.S. had shipped military equipment, including several armored carriers, to the Kosovo authorities free of charge.
