BRUSSELS. June 24 (Interfax) - The EU authorities have prohibited the supply of military and dual-use goods to Belarus as part of the sectoral economic sanctions against Minsk, the Council of the European Union said in a release issued on Thursday.
"The new targeted economic sanctions include the prohibition to directly or indirectly sell, supply, transfer or export to anyone in Belarus equipment, technology or software intended primarily for use in the monitoring or interception of the internet and of telephone communications, and dual-use goods and technologies for military use and to specified persons, entities or bodies in Belarus," the document said.
The restrictions also affect petroleum products, production of potassium chloride and goods used in the production of tobacco products.
"Trade in petroleum products, potassium chloride ('potash'), and goods used for the production or manufacturing of tobacco products is restricted," the press release said.
A total of 166 persons and 15 entities are currently subject to EU restrictive measures, the document said.
Euronews television earlier reported that the sectoral sanctions against Belarus would take effect on June 24.
The European Union announced its plans to impose sectoral sanctions against Belarus after the incident with the grounding in Minsk of a Ryanair flight en route from Athens to Vilnius and the detention of Belarusian opposition activist Roman Protasevich, which occurred in May 2021.
