MOSCOW. June 24 (Interfax) - Moscow is concerned about the beginning deployment of U.S. weapons at the missile defense base in Poland, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said.
"This is a matter of our constant concern. We have been aware of the deployment plans for a long time, and we believe that their goal is to undermine strategic stability," Grushko said in response to Interfax's question in Moscow.
Moscow has been repeatedly assured that "all efforts taken by the alliance aim to deter the so-called missile threat coming from Iran" and the potential is unable to affect Russia's strategic forces, he said.
"Nevertheless, our estimates show that, together with the other weapon systems, these two facilities in Poland and Romania, as well as the naval component deployed by the Americans at the Rota base in Spain, is able to intercept relevant missiles, and this cannot help but provoke our concern," Grushko said.
There are no restrictions on the development of technologies and, as time passes, these systems may acquire a brand new quality, he said.
"Anyway, whenever we speak about a new strategic stability equation, this element will be taken into account in our stance," Grushko said.
