CSTO Joint Staff chief discusses military assistance in Tajikistan amid escalation in Afghanistan

MOSCOW. July 7 (Interfax) - Chief of the Joint Staff of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Anatoly Sidorov has had a meeting in Tajikistan with the chiefs of Tajik law enforcement agencies, at which they discussed the situation on the border with Afghanistan, the press service for the CSTO Joint Staff said.

"Tajik Defense Minister Col. Gen. Sherali Mirzo briefed the task force led by Col. Gen. Anatoly Sidorov on the current military-political and military strategic situation in the region due to the escalation of the armed confrontation in Afghanistan, as well as in the Tajik-Afghan border area," the Joint Staff said on Wednesday.

Intensifying measures of joint operational and combat training of the defense agencies of the CSTO member states, as well as the provision of military and military-technical assistance, was discussed, it said.

"The exodus of Afghan citizens, including military personnel with weapons and military equipment to Tajikistan, was discussed with the participation of Commander of the Border Troops of the Tajik State National Security Committee Col. Gen. Rajabali Rahmonali," the Joint Staff said.
