Afghan Defense Ministry reports deaths of 455 Taliban members in past 24 hours

KABUL. Aug 2 (Interfax) - The Taliban movement (banned in Russia) suffered unprecedented casualties in the past 24 hours: 455 terrorist fighters were killed and 232 were injured, the Afghan Defense Ministry press center said.

The Taliban has sustained heavy casualties in the course of fierce fighting for Lashkargah, the administrative center of the southern Helmand province, and Herat, the administrative center of the same-name province, that has been on for ten days.

Over the past day, hostilities have been on in the provinces of Nangarhar, Paktia, Paktika, Logar, Kandahar, Faryab, Jowzjan, Balkh, Samangan, Takhar, Kunduz, Baghlan and Kapisa.

According to a source in the Afghan law enforcement agencies, the Taliban lost practically all commanders of the group operating in the Herat region in the overnight fight for Herat.

Last night clashes with government forces in the town of Haybatan, west of Herat, resulted in the death of Mullah Shahab, who was in charge of the Taliban group in Herat and the commander of the Red Brigade unit, and another three key military commanders - Mullah Quddus Guriani, Mullah Zahir Sultanzai and Mawlavi Abdul Majid.
