KABUL. Aug 10 (Interfax) - The clashes that have occurred between Afghan government forces and the Taliban movement (banned in Russia) over the past day have resulted in 361 Taliban fighters being killed and another 145 being injured, as well as in the destruction of a large amount of weapons and ammunition, the Afghan Defense Ministry's press service said on Tuesday.
Over that period, there were hostilities in the Nangarhar, Kunar, Logar, Paktia, Paktika, Maidan Wardak, Kandahar, Sar-e Pol, Helmand, Takhar, Kunduz, and Baghlan provinces, the press service said.
The Taliban suffered the heaviest casualties in the Paktia province, where security forces supported by aviation delivered a strike on Taliban positions in the Sayed Karam and Ahmadabad districts on Monday, killing 58 terrorists and injuring 21.
Meanwhile, defense and security forces and commandos, acting with the support of the air force, delivered a strike on the Taliban in the Injil, Guzara, and Zaul districts of the Herat province on Monday, killing nine terrorists and injuring 18.
Twelve Taliban members, including four major field commanders, Kari Zahir, Kari Osama, Kari Abbas, and Ghairat Gol, and two Pakistani terrorists were killed in the Kapisa province.
Fierce fighting for Kunduz, the administrative center of the Kapisa province, has been ongoing for two days. Afghan special ops forces are trying to push militants out of the city center.
In this province, just like in another two provinces bordering Tajikistan, Badakhshan and Takhar, practically all districts have been seized by the Taliban.
Government forces are in control of only one district, Warsaj, in Takhar. Meanwhile, in Badakhshan, government forces are stationed only in the administrative center of the province, Fayzabad.
