Situation on border with Afghanistan defused - Uzbek authorities

TASHKENT. Aug 16 (Interfax) - The situation has eased on the border with Afghanistan where more than 80 Afghan servicemen crossed into Uzbekistan and were detained on Saturday, Uzbekistan's Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.

"As of 10 a.m. (8 a.m. Moscow time) August 15 there was an easing of the situation in the Termez-Hairatan Bridge area," the ministry said.

Most of the Afghans left the Afghan side of the bridge and adjacent area on their own, it said.

"This became possible as a result of active politico-diplomatic measures taken and the explanatory work conducted," the ministry said.

It was reported that a group of 84 servicemen of the Afghanistan Armed Forces crossed into Uzbekistan on August 14 and was detained by officers of the Border Troops of the State Security Service; the trespassers offered no resistance and requested help, including medical, for three injured people.

Sanitary-epidemiological measures were carried out and medical assistance provided; the servicemen were also given food and provided with temporary accommodation, the Foreign Ministry said.

There was also an accumulation of Afghan military servicemen on the Afghan side of Termez-Hairatan Bridge, it said.

"Measures are being taken to provide humanitarian aid," the ministry said.
