MOSCOW. Aug 23 (Interfax) - All new ships being laid down at Russian shipyards on Monday will carry precision-guided munitions, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.
"Modern precision-guided munitions and the latest control and communications equipment will be installed on all these ships. The efficiency of most of them has been confirmed during combat missions in Syria," Putin said at a ceremony laying down warships for the Russian Navy.
Russia needs a powerful and balanced navy, he said.
"It plays a key role nowadays in the state security system, reliably protects our national interests, and makes a substantial contribution to strengthening strategic parity and international stability. We will keep developing Russia's naval capability, enhancing the navy's network of bases and infrastructure system, and equipping our ships with state-of-the-art weapons and hardware," Putin said.
Two coastal maritime defense zone multirole ships were being laid down in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, and four submarines to operate in remote areas started being constructed at Sevmash and at Admiralty Shipyards on Monday, he said.
The two new nuclear submarines would be named after Dmitry Donskoi and Knyaz Potyomkin, and two diesel submarines would be named the Mozhaisk and the Yakutsk, Putin said. The multirole surface ships will be named the Grozny and the Buiny.
Earlier on Monday, Putin ordered starting the construction of ships and submarines for the Russian Navy at leading shipbuilding facilities in a videoconference format.
The Knyaz Potyomkin and the Dmitry Donskoi submarines were laid down at Sevmash in Severodvinsk, the Mozhaisk and the Yakutsk diesel submarines at Admiralty Shipyards in St. Petersburg, and the Grozny and the Buiny corvettes at the Amur Shipbuilding Plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur.
