France calls for settlement in Transdniestria as part of Moldova's territorial integrity - FM Le Drian

CHISINAU. Sept 2 (Interfax) - French Minister of European and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian has spoken in favor of a fair settlement of the Transdniestrian crisis as part of Moldova's territorial integrity, and has backed Chisinau's European integration policy.

"France supports Moldova's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. We support efforts in the 5+2 negotiations to reach a sustainable and just solution to the Transdniestrian conflict," Le Drian said at a joint press conference in Chisinau with his Moldovan counterpart Nicu Popescu on Thursday.

He also noted that France is interested in developing the business environment in Moldova, linguistic and cultural ties, and teaching French in Moldova.

"In this period of international turbulence, when the Afghan crisis is in the focus of attention, good news should be welcomed. And I came to Chisinau to say that France, all 27 European Union member states are glad to see an EU-oriented Moldova on the path toward a democratic reform," Le Drian said.

"Although the European Union is increasingly involved in international relations, establishing partnerships with various countries from Africa to the Pacific Ocean, this does not mean that it will turn away from its closest partners, which Moldova is. We know that the balance in Europe also depends on your stability, the ability to make independent decisions, and the progress in the field of democracy," he added.

The French foreign minister became the first foreign minister to visit Moldova after the approval of the new government of the country.
