Federal Penitentiary Service investigating brawl that led to 2 deaths in Amursk penitentiary

KHABAROVSK. Sept 6 (Interfax) - A full probe into the causes and circumstances of a deadly brawl that took place in Penitentiary No. 14 in Russia's Khabarovsk Territory is now being conducted, the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN)'s territorial department said in a statement.

"At the moment, a number of operative and investigative procedures are being carried out at the penitentiary, officers of the service's territorial department, the regional prosecution service, and investigative agencies are at work, and recordings from video surveillance cameras are being studied," the statement said.

Department chief of staff Maj. Gen. Yury Dorokhin visited the penitentiary on Sunday. The territorial public monitoring commission plans to conduct a check on September 6. Commission members are on their way to Amursk. A team from FSIN's central office is also due to visit the Khabarovsk Territory for a check.

"The penitentiary is operating as usual, and the situation is stable and under the control of officers of the territorial penitentiary department," the statement said.

Two inmates who were hurt in the brawl have been hospitalized in Amur, and they are in fair condition, the Health Ministry of the Khabarovsk Territory said. Another inmate has been admitted to the ICU of a hospital in Komsomolsk-on-Amur following surgery. His condition is serious.

There was a mass brawl at Penitentiary No. 14 in the early hours of September 5. Two persons were killed, and several were injured. Special forces helped bring the situation under control.

A criminal case has been opened on counts of disruption of the activity of a penitentiary and double homicide.
