MOSCOW. Sept 6 (Interfax) - Russia demands that President of Guinea Alpha Conde be released and his immunity ensured, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.
"Moscow is opposed to any attempts at an unconstitutional change of administration. We demand that Conde be released and his immunity be ensured. We believe it is necessary to put the Guinea situation back on the constitutional track," the Foreign Ministry said in a commentary published on its website.
"We insistently urge all political forces in Guinea to abstain from actions that could further spark violence and to work on settling the situation peacefully, through negotiations," the ministry said.
The current whereabouts of Conde are unknown, it said.
"According to the Russian embassy in Conakry, no Russians staying in Guinea have been hurt, and everything is being done to ensure their security. We recommend that Russian citizens do not travel to the Republic of Guinea until full normalization has been achieved there," the ministry said.
The ministry said earlier that a visit from Foreign Minister Ibrahima Khalil Kaba to Russia, which was due to take place this week, had been canceled in connection with the domestic situation.
The minister was planning to visit Russia on September 6-8 for talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.
The Guinean military seized power and arrested President Conde on September 5. Later, the borders were closed, the government and the parliament were dissolved, and the constitution was suspended.
