MOSCOW. Sept 6 (Interfax) - A unit of the Russian Northern Fleet's ships and vessels in the Barents Sea practiced tackling a critical situation near the Prirazlomnaya ice-resistant, stationary offshore platform (the Prirazlomnoye deposit, being developed by Gazprom Neft), the Northern Fleet's press service said.
"Under the scenario of the training exercise, the Severomorsk large anti-submarine ship heading a unit of ships was alerted by the Northern Fleet's operations service about the activities of an unknown trespasser vessel performing dangerous maneuvers in the vicinity of the ice-resistant, stationary offshore platform," the press service said.
The participants in the exercise also practiced neutralizing mock terrorists on the platform itself, it said.
"This training exercise was one-of-a-kind because forces and hardware from the Northern Fleet's Arctic group acted on Prirazlomnaya, which is the most frost-resistant, ice-resistant stationary platform, for the first time. Prior to that, this exercise was held only in its proximity," the press service said.
Prirazlomnoye is the only offshore field in the Russian Arctic at which oil production is underway. Gazprom Neft is now working on a plan for the field's operations on the horizon to 2038 and is considering options for how this platform can become a hub for the development of the company's projects in the Arctic, incorporating fields located nearby - the Dolginskoye field and Severo-Zapadny licensed block.
