Zelensky discusses results of his visit to U.S., security in Donbas with Congress delegation

KYIV. Sept 6 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has met with a U.S. Congress delegation currently in Ukraine on a visit, the Ukrainian presidential press service said.

"Representatives of the Congress were briefed on the key results of the visit by the Ukrainian head of state to the U.S. In this context, the parties highly assessed the agreement to update the Ukraine-U.S. Charter on Strategic Partnership and the start of the work of the reinvigorated Strategic Partnership Commission," the press service said in a statement.

Zelensky reiterated the importance of support from the U.S. Congress in implementing agreements reached during his visit, above all an agreement to step up security and defense cooperation between the two countries. The Transformation Plan of Ukraine presented in Washington opens up opportunities for developing the new quality of two states' partnership in the economy, investment and sectoral cooperation, he said.

A considerable part of this plan is dedicated to the "green" transformation and modernization of Ukraine's economy based on the principles of sustainable development and de-carbonization, Zelensky said, expressing hope that the U.S. will become actively involved in implementing this plan.

Besides, the president briefed the Congress delegation on the situation in the east of Ukraine and along the country's borders there.

The parties also discussed security in the region and the ongoing developments in Belarus. Zelensky, in turn, said that the active phase of the Zapad (West) 2021 joint Russian-Belarusian strategic maneuvers is due to start soon.

Great attention was also given to the progress made in pursuing Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic aspirations.

"We count on the U.S.' support regarding Ukraine's future membership in NATO," Zelensky said.

The president thanked U.S. Congress members for "their clear understanding of the security threats posed by the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project."

The participants in the meeting also exchanged opinions on Ukraine's progress in implementing key reforms and Washington's further support of this process.
