Russian and Israeli FMs to hold talks in Moscow on Sept 9 with focus on Syria

MOSCOW. Sept 8 (Interfax) - Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid will visit Moscow and will hold talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

"Foreign Minister of Israel Yair Lapid will be in Moscow on a working visit on September 8-9. On September 9, he will hold talks with Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Lavrov. It will be their first one-on-one meeting following Lapid's appointment to the post of Israeli foreign minister in June of this year," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on its website.

The ministers intend to thoroughly "compare notes" on key aspects of the bilateral, regional and international agenda, it said.

The situation in and around Syria will be high on the meeting's agenda, the Foreign Ministry said.

"Great attention will be given to the problems of the Middle East peace process. We are convinced that comprehensive stabilization in the Middle East is impossible without securing a lasting two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in line with international law," it said.

Moscow believes that Lapid's visit to Russia will give additional impetus to the development of mutually advantageous cooperation between Russia and Israel, primarily in the field of foreign policy coordination in the interests of securing lasting peace and stability in the Middle East, it said.
