MOSCOW. Sept 8 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin and European Council President Charles Michel had a substantive exchange of opinions on the events in Afghanistan during a phone conversation, the Kremlin press service said.
"Both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining civil peace in the country and preventing violence, and also establishing real inter-Afghan dialogue to ensure the integrity of the Afghan state, taking into account the interests of all population groups," the report said.
"Readiness for interaction to stabilize the situation and prevent risks of the spread of terrorism, extremism and drug crime was expressed," the press service said.
The sides also discussed Ukraine and Nagorno-Karabakh.
"It was agreed to continue contacts on various levels," the report said.
Michel also said earlier he had discussed the situation in Afghanistan with the Russian president by phone.
"Discussed with the Russian president the recent developments in Afghanistan and impact on the broader region," Michel said on Twitter on Wednesday.
The EU and Russia "share an interest in regional stability", he said.
When speaking about Afghanistan, Michel reiterated the importance of averting a humanitarian catastrophe in this country and guaranteeing the observance of human rights there.
During the phone call, the leaders also exchanged opinions on ways to settle the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, he said.
Apart from that, Michel once again reaffirmed the European Union's support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine and Georgia and condemned the Belarusian authorities' handling of the situation with migrants heading to the EU border via Belarus.
"Condemned Belarus's weaponization of irregular migration against EU Member States," Michel said.
