Kazakhstan considering taking ethnic Kazakhs out of Afghanistan

NUR-SULTAN. Sept 8 (Interfax) - Kazakhstan is cooperating with its partners to address problems related to the current situation in Afghanistan, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.

"Kazakhstan is closely working with foreign partners to resolve the current problems. First of all, we arranged for the evacuation of our citizens. Now, we are considering the possibility of bringing back from Afghanistan our kandases [compatriots], the Kazakh diaspora," Tokayev was quoted by the presidential press service as saying while accepting the credentials of foreign ambassadors on Wednesday.

"For humanitarian reasons, we have extended the student visas of 57 Afghan students. Also, we provided air transit corridors and the possibility of refueling to aircraft with foreign nationals on board. The city of Almaty has been chosen as the temporary location for UN agencies in Afghanistan," he said.
