Russia's Matviyenko warns against jumping to conclusions about new Afghan govt

VIENNA. Sept 8 (Interfax) - Russia will watch the further steps taken by the new government of Afghanistan before drawing conclusions on how to build relations with it, Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko said.

"We'll be watching closely what's going on and on that premise will draw conclusions and build our relations," Matviyenko told journalists at the end of her visit to Austria on Wednesday.

It is too soon to draw conclusions, she said.

"The fact is, today, the Taliban [organization banned in Russia] control the whole territory, and today, these new Afghan authorities are a fact, there is no denying it. For now, it is hard to draw conclusions about how the government will work, what political system there will be, how they will behave in the country, how they are going to build international relations," Matviyenko said.

What is needed now is to patiently study and analyze, which by no means precludes dialogue, she said.

"Working contacts, dialogue, but it's too early to draw conclusions about how the government will work, what they will be inclined to do, whether civil norms, the rights of people, women will be protected," Matviyenko said.
