YEKATERINBURG. Sept 9 (Interfax) - Amid the escalation in Afghanistan, the Russian military base in Tajikistan has held a training exercise that focused on repelling a mock terrorist attack, Russia's Central Military District said on Thursday.
"Under the plot of the exercise, a mock enemy group in vehicles tried to illegal enter a military unit's compound through a checkpoint, using firearms. After being alerted to what happened, a counterterrorism unit arrived at the site of the attack on BTR-82A armored personnel carriers and sealed off the illegal armed formation by encircling it," the military district's press service said.
"During this exercise, the base's command checked the units' forces and hardware: personnel, weapons and gear, the skills of operating specialized equipment to defuse and track hazardous items, as well as reconnaissance, communications and observation systems," it said.
The Russian military also used unmanned aerial vehicles during the drills, the press service said.
The training exercise was held amid the escalation in neighboring Afghanistan, where the Taliban movement, banned in Russia, has captured power.
