Russian Northern Fleet training Arctic defense

MOSCOW. Sept 10 (Interfax) - The Russian Northern Fleet is training defense of Russian Arctic territories, the fleet press service said on Friday.

"The exercise will assess the level of preparedness of the Northern Fleet commands to plan and carry out operations managing crises in the Arctic Ocean and to control forces in the course of defense of Russian Arctic territories and the provision of military security and marine economic activity of the Russian Federation in the Arctic region," the press service said.

The exercise will also help assess skills of commanders and staffs in planning combat engagement and troop control.

"Cohesion between tactical groups of ships and vessels and coastal and ground forces has been checked in the course of joint training missions. Tactics and methods of sea battle and hostilities in the Arctic region have been trained," the press service said.

The Northern Fleet announced the beginning of an exercise that involves about 50 ships, 120 planes and helicopters, and about 8,000 servicemen on Thursday.

The fleet is holding the drill against the backdrop of the Zapad-2021 Russian-Belarusian strategic exercise that started on Thursday.
