Russia's Northern Fleet announces start of return of forces after major maneuvers in Arctic

MOSCOW. Sept 15 (Interfax) - The forces of Russia's Northern Fleet on Wednesday began returning to base after completing their Arctic maneuvers, which involved some 8,000 personnel, around 50 ships, and 120 planes and helicopters.

"Today, Northern Fleet forces involved in the training exercise in the Arctic with the Arctic expedition group began preparing to return to base," the Northern Fleet's press service said.

"With practical steps, the fleet's personnel involved in the Arctic expeditionary group's training exercise confidently proved their preparedness to defend Russia's Arctic area, to maintain military security, and to ensure the Russian Federation's maritime economic activity in the Arctic," Northern Fleet Commander Alexander Moiseyev said when summing up the tentative results of the maneuvers.
