CSTO leaders approve plan for Collective Forces' equipment with modern weapons - secretary general

MOSCOW. Sept 16 (Interfax) - The Collective Forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) will be provided with modern weapons and hardware, CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas said.

The CSTO Collective Security Council met in Dushanbe on Thursday to discuss, among other issues, the threats coming from Afghanistan since the takeover by the Taliban (terrorist organization banned in Russia).

"The heads of state approved a plan for the CSTO Collective Rapid Reaction Forces' equipment with modern weapons, military and special hardware, and special equipment. This is a crucial, timely document, which will bring our Collective Rapid Reaction Forces to a whole new level if implemented," the CSTO press service quoted Zas as saying.

"Given the changed situation in Afghanistan, the plan of operative deployment of the organization's Collective Forces in the Central Asian region and the composition of military contingents and special formations of the CSTO Collective Rapid Reaction Forces have been updated," he said.

The CSTO is closely monitoring the situation on the Tajik-Afghan border, Zas said.

"The provision of the security of CSTO member states remains the main objective of the organization under the current circumstances. We still prioritize the use of political and diplomatic tools in our activity," Zas said.
