MOSCOW. Sept 21 (Interfax) - The Gorizont hydrographic vessel of the Russian Northern Fleet has specified Russia's coordinates in the Franz Josef Land area, the fleet's press service said on Monday.
"The depths were measured; the coordinates of critical points were specified. These are the very coordinates based on which the border of the Russian Federation is drawn," the vessel's captain Vitaly Khopryachkov was quoted as saying by the press service.
During comprehensive oceanographic activity, "the bottom topography was surveyed with a total volume of more than 11,000 kilometers, water and soil samples were taken in the water area of the Barents and Kara Seas," the statement said.
Research has been conducted over the past two months. Now, the Gorizont has returned to the base of the Northern Fleet hydrographic ships in the town of Mishukovo.
The Romuald Muklevich hydrographic vessel returned to Murmansk last week, during the joint expedition of the Northern Fleet and the Russian Geographical Society, its crew conducted research off Severny Island of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago and the continental coast, where the routes of northern convoys ran during the Great Patriotic War, the press service said.
