Lavrov meets with Egyptian FM on UNGA sidelines

UN. Sept 23 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday evening.

Shoukry said that he was pleased to meet with Lavrov.

"We can also meet in Moscow," Lavrov said in response.

During the meeting, the ministers discussed steps to further develop Russian-Egyptian relations, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website.

"The parties reiterated the need to maintain the rapid pace of bilateral contacts, where the trust-based dialogue of the two friendly countries' leaders plays an important role. They emphasized their mutual confidence that the treaty on comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation between Russia and Egypt, which entered into force in January 2021, will help strengthen interaction in trade, the economy, humanitarian affairs, etc.," the ministry said.

"The foreign ministers of the two countries also exchanged opinions on key aspects of the situation in the Middle East and North Africa with a focus on the situation in Libya and Syria and the Palestinian-Israeli peace process," it said.

"They reaffirmed the mutual commitment of Moscow and Cairo to deepening foreign policy coordination, including within the framework of the UN and other international platforms," the ministry said.

Lavrov arrived at the UN Headquarters on Wednesday to attend events of the UN General Assembly high-level week.
