Russian warship thwarts attempt by U.S. destroyer to violate Russian border in Sea of Japan - Defense Ministry

MOSCOW. Oct 15 (Interfax) - A ship of the Russian Navy's Pacific Fleet has stopped an attempt by a U.S. destroyer to cross the Russian border in the Sea of Japan, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

"At about 5:00 p.m. local time today, October 15, the destroyer Chafee (DDG 90) of the U.S. Navy, which has for several days been operating in the Sea of Japan, approached the territorial waters of the Russian Federation and made an attempt to cross the state border," the Defense Ministry said on Friday.

After several warnings addressed to the foreign ship, the Russian Pacific Fleet's large anti-submarine ship Admiral Tributs, acting within the rules for international navigation, took a course toward pushing the violator out of Russian territorial waters.

"Convinced of the determination of the Russian ship's crew to prevent a violation of the state border, the destroyer Chafee changed its course and turned away at 5:50 p.m., when it was less than 60 meters away from the large anti-submarine ship Admiral Tributs," the ministry said.
