Russia remains committed to UN Charter - Peskov (Part 2)

MOSCOW. Oct 19 (Interfax) - Russia remains committed to the UN Charter, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said in connection with Turkish President Recep Tayyyip Erdogan's idea about the need to review the balance of power in the UN Security Council.

"As far as Russia is concerned, it has been and remains a member of the organization, the Security Council, and remains committed to the United Nations Charter, and all of this is in there," Peskov told reporters, commenting on Erdogan's statement.

When asked to comment on the recent statement made by the Turkish president saying that the fate of humankind should not be decided by a handful of countries that won the Second World War and that a plan of action is necessary to drive into the corner the five permanent members of the UNSC and give broader rights to the other members, as well as on whether the Kremlin deems such changes necessary, Peskov said, "It's a question that hinges on the consensus of the five [UNSC permanent] members. You know that in order to discuss all the challenges facing humanity, President [Vladimir] Putin has put forward an initiative for the quintet to get together and discuss all issues."
