Russia's FSIN denies reports of inmates at Saratov penal colony refusing to work

MOSCOW/ SARATOV. Oct 20 (Interfax) - The situation is quiet in the Saratov region's Correctional Facility No. 13, and contrary to media reports, no incidents have occurred there, the press center for the regional branch of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) said.

"Some media outlets have circulated information that hundreds of inmates at Correctional Facility No. 13 of the FSIN branch for the Saratov region have refused to work. This information is not true," the press center said in a statement shared with Interfax on Tuesday.

"The facility is functioning as usual," it said.

The Gulag.ru human rights project said on Tuesday evening, citing an unnamed source, that there was a largescale protest in Correctional Facility No. 13, i.e., that allegedly hundreds of inmates being held there were refusing to work.

"Special operations forces and additional forces have arrived at the penal colony. Police vehicles have entered its grounds. Some of the protesters will be transported [to other penitentiaries]," Gulag.ru said.
