MOSCOW. Oct 22 (Interfax) - The Veliky Novgorod submarine from the Russian Black Sea Fleet's Novorossiysk Naval Base fired Kalibr-PL missiles at a mock enemy group of ships during a training exercise, the Black Sea Fleet said in a statement.
"As part of participation in a cross-branch opposing-force tactical exercise of Southern Military District forces, the submarine in a submerged position carried out electronic missile launches on mock enemy ships imitated by a tactical group of the fleet's anti-submarine and missile carrying ships," the fleet said.
Under the scenario of the maneuvers, the submarine left its base and headed to a training range, where its crew hunted and destroyed mock enemy surface ships, practiced promptly submerging to various depths, controlling the submarine as it rose to the surface, and practiced damage control, it said.
The training exercise took place as part of this year's inspection of Southern Military District forces under the supervision of the military district's Commander Gen. of the Army Alexander Dvornikov.
In all, the military district's drills involve some 8,000 servicemen and around 350 weapons and pieces of military hardware contributed by combined-arms armies, Air Force and Air Defense units, units of different branches of the Armed Forces, special operations forces under regional jurisdiction, and forces of the Black Sea Fleet and the Caspian Flotilla.
