Russian troops practice destroying illegal armed units at range near Afghan border

MOMIRAK RANGE, Tajikistan. Oct 22 (Interfax) - Units of Russia's 201st Military Base and the Tajik Armed Forces practiced destroying a band of invaders at the Momirak Range about 15-20 kilometers away from the Tajik-Afghan border, the headquarters for the exercise said.

"According to the scenario of the exercise, a pair of L-39 planes of the Tajik Air Force conducting reconnaissance along the border with a neighboring state detected an illegal armed group numbering about 100 people rapidly advancing into Tajikistan's territory," the headquarters said.

A joint unit of army aircraft including Mil Mi-8 transport and combat helicopters and Mi-24 strike helicopters was engaged in the exercise.

"Self-propelled Gvozdika howitzers and Grad multiple rocket launchers provided fire support to the motorized infantry. To prevent illegal armed units from bringing in their reserves, artillery crews struck their armored vehicles and personnel at a distance of ten kilometers," it said.
