Space center in Kourou may turn into space tourism venue - Rogozin

MOSCOW. Oct 26 (Interfax) - The Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana, may be transformed into a space tourism venue, Roscosmos head Dmitry Rogozin said.

"The piloted status of this center is an option. That would require a minor improvement of the mobile service tower. That will help move space tourism to Kourou," Rogozin said at a press briefing on Tuesday.

In his words, Russian rockets and Russian spaceships will be performing the flights. "Most probably, we will use this launch site, in particular, for our federal launches. We have an interest - this is a unique point on the equator, which is very convenient from the angle of payloads," Rogozin said.

He believes that Kourou will remain cost-effective after 2023 if the Europeans perform at least one launch per year using Russia's Soyuz rockets.
