Basayev-Khattab gang member who escaped from Astrakhan psych hospital put on federal wanted list

ASTRAKHAN. Oct 27 (Interfax) - Magomed Alkhanov, who was convicted for banditry and ran away from a psychiatric hospital in Astrakhan, has been put on the federal wanted list, the Federal Penitentiary Service's Directorate for the region told Interfax.

"Alkhanov has been put on the federal wanted list," the agency said.

The agency confirmed that a medical evaluation of the runaway man had been performed in the psychiatric hospital.

According to earlier reports, Alkhanov was put on the wanted list in the region on October 26. It was reported, citing an informed source, that he was in the Astrakhan hospital for a medical evaluation.

Alkhanov was implicated in a case involving the February 29, 2000 attack by a gang led by Basayev and Khattab against servicemen from the 6th company of the 104th regiment of the 76th Pskov division of the Airborne Forces. The attack occurred in the mountainous area near the village of Ulus-Kert, Shatoi region of Chechnya. Eighty-four servicemen were killed and four suffered injuries of various degrees in the attack.
