Lavrov views G20 summit outcomes as very positive

ROME. Nov 1 (Interfax) - Russia has positively assessed the outcomes of the Group of Twenty (G20) summit, which is underway in Rome, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Sunday.

"I think this is a very positive result. The main trend, which I think we should support in every way, is the desire for collective work, we are always in favor of it," he told reporters in Rome.

The minister noted that the main conclusion that can be drawn from the work of the G20 summit is the agreement on a declaration, which says that attempts to promote unilateral approaches were not in demand. "And the overwhelming majority of participants called for the G20 to set an example in reaching collective solutions that will balance interests, both in the fight against coronavirus infection, and in the fight to preserve a comfortable climate, as well as in the area of energy security," Lavrov said.

"If it is the ambitions of the European Union, we have to take into account that other countries also have ambitions," Lavrov said, when asked why Russia did not back the idea of Western partners to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

"But it's not very polite to use the negotiation process on this issue the way the representatives of the G7 states do. And if they have ambitions to achieve this by 2050 and the Italian media are presenting this as the truth in the last instance, I think this is not very respectful to the other G20 representatives and the international community," the minister said.

"We have calculated everything, and we do not want to be guided by empty ambitions and promises. [...] We plan to achieve zero carbon emissions no later than 2060. This is our goal, which is calculated and which we will strive for," he said.
