Uzbekistan believes Afghanistan could join CIS Railway Transport Council

TASHKENT. Nov 1 (Interfax) - The Uzbek railway company Ozbekiston Temir Yollari said it expects Afghanistan to join the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Railway Transport Council in the future, the Uzbek company's press service said on Friday.

The top management of Ozbekiston Temir Yollari and Russian Railways (RZD) discussed prospects of bilateral cooperation in a videoconference on October 29.

"The parties addressed the Afghanistan Railway Authority's possible future accession to the Commonwealth's Railway Transport Council, taking into account the interest displayed by Afghanistan," it said.

The meeting participants agreed to conduct a videoconference in the near future, to be attended by the management of the Uzbek, Russian, and Afghan railway administrations, it said.

The CIS Railway Transport Council was set up in keeping with an agreement between the CIS heads of government in 1992.
