Russian Interior Ministry confirms detention of Basayev gang member who escaped from psychiatric hospital

ASTRAKHAN. Nov 3 (Interfax) - Magomed Alkhanov, convicted of banditry, has been detained thanks to vigilant Astrakhan residents, the Russian Interior Ministry's spokesperson in the Astrakhan region told Interfax.

"Magomed Alkhanov, who was arrested consistent with Part 2, Article 209 and Articles 279 and 317 of the Russian Criminal Code and escaped from a specialized healthcare institution on October 26, 2021, was detained in Astrakhan on November 2. He was apprehended in a cafe in the Trusovsky district much thanks to vigilant Astrakhan residents," the spokesperson said.

Local residents told the police about an unknown person who looked like the wanted fugitive, the spokesperson said.

It was reported earlier with the reference to the regional police department that the Astrakhan police, acting together with the local branch of the Federal Security Service, had detained the runaway.

The manhunt for Alkhanov began on October 26 after he escaped from an Astrakhan psychiatric hospital where he was undergoing a medical examination.

Alkhanov was indicted in the case of an armed attack of the gang of Basayev and Khattab on servicemen of the Sixth Company of the 104th Regiment of the 76th Pskov Airborne Division on February 29, 2000. The attack near the village of Ulus-Kert in the Shatoi district of Chechnya killed 84 servicemen.

Alkhanov was convicted of banditry.

The regional branch of the Federal Penitentiary Service offered a 100,000-ruble reward to those who could help find and catch the fugitive.
