Russian fleet holds firing exercise amid U.S. ships' visit to Black Sea

MOSCOW. Nov 8 (Interfax) - Two Russian ASW corvettes and a diesel submarine have trained in the Black Sea amid a visit by U.S. Navy ships, the Russian Black Sea Fleet's press service said on Monday.

"The Yeisk and Kasimov small anti-submarine ships of the Black Sea Fleet, acting as part of a hunter-killer team, trained searching for and detecting a mock enemy submarine together with a Kamov Ka-27M ASW helicopter," the press service said.

The exercise took place at a marine range in the Black Sea, it said.

The Russian corvettes tracked down and attacked a submarine using torpedoes and rocket bombs. A Black Sea Fleet submarine impersonated the mock enemy.

"While chasing a submarine, the ships accomplished air defense missions at sea and fired air defense missile and artillery systems at an airborne target," the press service said.

The exercise was held during a visit of U.S. Navy ships to the Black Sea.

USS Mount Whitney, the flagship of the United States Sixth Fleet, arrived in the Black Sea on November 4.

On October 30, the Black Sea was visited by the USS Porter destroyer of the U.S. Navy carrying long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles.

The Montreux Convention limits the presence of ships from non-littoral countries in the Black Sea to 21 days.
