Kazakh FM rules out CSTO forces' deployment to DPR, LPR

NUR-SULTAN. Feb 22 (Interfax) - Kazakh Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tleuberdi has ruled out the deployment of Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) forces to the Donetsk (DPR) and Luhansk (LPR) People's Republics.

"No, this is not possible, as the CSTO Charter strictly limits the use of military and peacekeeping forces. They can be used exclusively in the CSTO area," Tleuberdi told reporters in response to a question whether Kazakh troops might be sent to the DPR and the LPR as part of a CSTO mission.

"The CSTO secretary general has commented on the possible deployment of a peacekeeping contingent to the DPR and the LPR - he said it was a hypothetical issue, that is, it is practically impossible. Naturally, deployment would require a resolution and respective mandate from the UN Security Council. As you know, the United Nations has peacekeeping forces of its own, so the option is not on the table," Tleuberdi said.
