MOSCOW. Aug 2 (Interfax) - A visit of U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan may seriously destabilize the global situation, State Duma First Deputy Speaker, Chairman of the Russia-China Friendship Society Ivan Melnikov told reporters on Tuesday.
"The visit of Nancy Pelosi is obviously provocative. On the one hand, this is a totally reckless and irresponsible step that contravenes the earlier Chinese-U.S. agreements," Melnikov said.
"On the other hand, if we take a look at the broader picture in the context of everything that is happening on the world stage nowadays, we can see that we bear witness to yet another step of the United States aimed at the most serious global destabilization," he said.
"We view the 'one China' principle as a basic norm of international relations, condemn the visit of Mrs. Pelosi to Taiwan and support the efforts of the Chinese leadership and people to protect their national sovereignty and territorial integrity," Melnikov said.
