Decision to extend or end mechanism of transborder humanitarian aid to Syria to be made by late Dec - Russian rep Lavrentyev

ASTANA. Nov 23 (Interfax) - A decision to either extend or end the mechanism of transborder humanitarian aid to Syria will be made by the end of December, Russian Special Presidential Representative Alexander Lavrentyev said.

"We have practically two months left until January 10. We will sum up results and will make a final decision either to extend or to completely dismantle the mechanism of transborder humanitarian aid; I think that will happen sometime at the end of December. We first agreed on that with our Syrian friends," Lavrentyev said at a press briefing in Astana on Wednesday, following the Astana-format meeting on Syria.

In his words, the extension of a respective UN Security Council resolution, No. 2642, has been discussed at the meeting "with understanding that the guarantees undertaken by Western countries in regard to humanitarian assistance to Syria will be fulfilled in relation to the early recovery projects."
