ROSTOV-ON-DON. Dec 30 (Interfax) - The territory of Energodar, Zaporozhye region, came under artillery fire from the Ukrainian Armed Forces on Friday, there are hits on the industrial zone of the nuclear power plant and near the thermal power plant, Renat Karchaa, advisor to the head of Rosenergoatom Concern, told Interfax.
"There are hits. They are mostly hitting the industrial zone and the outskirts of the city, two hits were near the thermal power plant. There were no strikes on the plant itself," Karchaa said.
He added that the shelling is continuing.
According to reports of the Russian Defense Ministry and the Energodar authorities, the shelling attacks of the city, the nuclear power plant and the power plant have been continuing almost since mid-summer. No power units have been damaged, but auxiliary support systems have been hit.
The Zaporozhye thermal power plant was considered the most powerful thermal power plant in Ukraine. It is located in close proximity to the nuclear power plant.
The Zaporozhye NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, which has six VVER-1000 power units. According to the latest data, two of them are operational, but only to supply heat to Energodar.
The plant facilities were passed into Russia's ownership, and the federal state unitary enterprise Zaporozhye NPP was established. The Operating Organization of the Zaporozhye NPP, which was established by JSC Rosenergoatom (part of Rosatom State Corporation), became its operator.
On September 1, an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) mission visited the plant. After that, several specialists of the agency remain at the plant and are periodically rotated.
