Turkmen president becomes gen of army

ASHGABAT. Jan 27 (Interfax) - Turkmen President, Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Serdar Berdimuhamedov has been awarded the title of general of the army.

The governmental newspaper Neutral Turkmenistan and other leading media outlets of the country published the respective resolution of the Turkmen parliament (Majlis) on Friday.

The parliament resolution says the decision was made "consistent with Article 81 of the Turkmen Constitution." Paragraph 9, Article 81 of the Turkmen Constitution says that the Majlis "establishes state awards, decorates the Turkmen president with state awards and assigns military and other state ranks to the president."

Turkmenistan celebrates the Fatherland Defender's Day on January 27.

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, former Turkmen president and father of the incumbent president, is also a general of the army.

Serdar Berdimuhamedov is 41 years old.
