Baku warned Iran about need to bolster security of its embassy in Tehran yet it did not pay due attention - Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry

BAKU. Jan 27 (Interfax) - The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said it had warned Tehran about the need to bolster security of its embassy to Iran.

"We strongly condemn the treacherous terror attack on the Azerbaijani embassy to Iran. The Iranian side, where the embassy is situated, should have met its obligation to ensure security of the embassy and its employees consistent with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations," the ministry said in a statement.

There were attempts to threaten the Azerbaijani embassy to Iran, and Tehran was repeatedly asked to prevent such situations and ensure security of diplomatic missions, the ministry said. "Unfortunately, the latest bloody terror attack demonstrates serious consequences of the lack of due attention to our insistent requests of the kind. We believe that the recent anti-Azerbaijani campaign in Iran contributed to the attack on the embassy," it said.

Baku demanded that Tehran rapidly identify the attack perpetrators and organizers and "subject them to the most severe punishment."

"The Azerbaijani side will be using every opportunity provided by the existent international mechanisms to make sure that the culprits are identified and properly punished," the ministry said.

It is also planned to organize the evacuation of employees of the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran and their families.
