Russian State Duma's Defense Committee chair calls for int'l agreement on guarantees against weaponizing space

MOSCOW. Feb 1 (Interfax) - Collective efforts are needed to draft an international agreement on guarantees against weaponizing outer space, State Duma Defense Committee Chairman Andrei Kartapolov said.

"Russia consistently advocates the joint drafting of a legally binding international agreement to provide solid guarantees against weaponizing outer space," Kartapolov said on Telegram on Wednesday, following the second meeting of chairs of the parliamentary foreign, defense and security committees of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) member states.

"There is need for collective efforts at this moment," he said.

"We are ready to actively support the efforts of the international community towards keeping outer space free from weapons of any kind amid the international system's transformation, which is accompanied by growing conflict potential," Kartapolov said.

The second meeting of chairs of the parliamentary foreign, defense and security committees of the CSTO member states took place at the State Duma on Wednesday to address the prevention of an arms race in outer space.
