Situation on border with Ukraine dangerous - Belarusian border official

MINSK. Feb 6 (Interfax) - The situation on its border with Ukraine is dangerous for Belarus, the Belarusian State Border Committee said.

"From the military standpoint, the situation southward, certainly, could not be more dangerous for us. Why? Because the country is at war, it is where the density of Ukraine's armed-forces and territorial-defense units and the rest is most substantial. What we are seeing there are quite serious provocative activities," Dmitry Lyubkin, the Committee's chief operations analyst, told the STV channel on Monday.

"The trend we are seeing is people coming up to the border, without insignia, who cannot be identified as border guards. It is they who engage in unfriendly activities: pointing weapons in the direction of our border patrol teams, provoking," he said.

The official noted that that was not to say that Ukrainian border guards had left the Belarusian border altogether, "because no one knows the situation on the Ukrainian side better than they do. Clearly, there are some people there who are advising, working, even for intelligence maybe, who are present there constantly," Lyubkin said.
