Estonia ramps up defense spending to 2.85% of GDP

TALLINN. Feb 6 (Interfax) - Estonia is planning to ramp up the level of defense spending to 2.85% of the country's gross domestic product, or one billion euro, this year, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said.

"We're not making any fundamental changes to the framework document of our security policy but considering today's situation, we are doing much more to maintain our own security both by ourselves and together with our allies. We have increased our defense spending to a historically high level. Estonia's defense expenditures in 2023 will exceed one billion euros, which is 2.85 percent of GDP," Kallas said, speaking in parliament about the fundamental principles of new security policy on Monday.

Accordance to the new fundamental of security policy, Estonia acts in five areas of activity, "which form a single whole, each part being equally important for strengthening its security."

Among those, Kallas mentioned social unity and the rise of the State, economic security and welfare, internal security and public order, military defense and international activity.
