SUKHUM. Feb 7 (Interfax) - Head of the State Security Service of Abkhazia Robert Kiut believes that attempts by "certain forces" to create from outside an anti-Russian agenda in the republic pose a threat to Abkhazia's statehood.
"Intentional attempts to generate anti-Russian sentiment in Abkhazia pose a direct threat to Abkhazia's statehood," Kiut said at a press briefing in Sukhum.
"Destructive and hostile forces are undertaking attempts from outside to make use of the anti-Russian sentiment that allegedly exists in society. An anti-Russian agenda is being artificially created with reference to different stages of Abkhaz-Russian relations. These attempts have nothing in common with today's reality," he said.
Threats are coming from Abkhazia's ill-wishers, who recently have seriously changed their tactic to win the minds of the younger generation, he said.
"In the information space, certain forces have begun spreading topics which are frequently accompanied by attempts to manipulate public opinion and are aimed at disseminating anti-Russian and therefore destructive rhetoric," Kiut said.
It is Russia that is the guarantor of peace, stability and security in Abkhazia, he added.
"The state services will take tough measures within the framework of the law against persons who pursue anti-Abkhaz projects," he said.
