Russian ship holds missile drill in Barents Sea

MOSCOW. Feb 7 (Interfax) - The Admiral Levchenko destroyer has had an artillery-and-missile firing exercise in the Barents Sea, the Russian Northern Fleet's press service said on Tuesday.

"The ship has practiced a sea battle with a mock enemy and has fired an AK-100 artillery system, its main caliber weapon, at a towed seaborne target. It also engaged a Kinzhal air defense missile system, which could be used against both airborne and fast-moving surface targets," the press service said.

"The target was successfully hit in the course of fulfillment of the combat training assignment," it said.

In addition, the destroyer "practiced interaction with Kamov Ka-27 shipborne helicopters, and its artillery and missile systems performed various kinds of artillery shooting at visible and covered coastal targets," the press service said.

The targets placed on the coast of the Rybachy Peninsula simulated fire nests and command posts of the enemy, it said.

The ship also had an air defense drill and fired air defense missile systems and artillery at a simulated airborne target.

"The training areas in the Barents Sea were closed for civilian ships and aircraft. Once the mission was accomplished, the ship returned to base," the press service said.

According to the press service, it was a scheduled exercise.
