Lack of progress at JCPOA talks may lead to uncontrollable escalation - Russian rep

MOSCOW. Feb 8 (Interfax) - The impasse at the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) talks is fraught with an uncontrollable escalation, Russian Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said.

"The deadlock at the Vienna talks on restoration of the JCPOA is fraught with uncontrolled escalation," Ulyanov said on Telegram on Wednesday.

The EU is working on the full reinstatement of the JCPOA, Peter Stano, spokesman for EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, said on Tuesday.

In 2018, previous U.S. President Donald Trump declared the United States' unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA and reinstated sanctions on Iran, including those on the Iranian oil sector, which prompted Iran to begin phased abandonment of certain terms of the nuclear deal. Incumbent U.S. President Joe Biden said the United States was ready to return to the deal on certain conditions.

Iran, the UK, Germany, China, France and Russia have held several rounds of talks in Vienna to reinstate the JCPOA. The United States is not directly involved in the negotiations.
